The Value of Values - challenge

watercolor 5" x 7" and 7" x 5"

These were the painitngs that I did for this past week's challenge. We just had to do one, but I felt that I picked so much on the verticle one that I wanted to do another very quickly. It took about 15 minutes to do the second one. It is amazing how much time these little ones take. It is so much easier for me to paint larger and looser...but I guess that is why these are challenges.

The challenge was to have one area of values taking up most of your painting (papa) then another set of values using a little less space (mama) and then the last set of values - just a smidge (baby). They are fun to do, but it really made me think. I went through my sketchbooks and I could see where I might want to improve my sketches/paintings.

"Walking the Pier" - Navy Pier-Chicago

watercolor 14 x 21

I felt inspired to paint this painting from a visit this past summer. I loved how the sun was shinning onto the walkway. It is such a neat place to be anytime of the year.

Bleeding Hearts-Plein Air

Watercolors 7 x 11

I wanted to do some plein air painting the other day so I went out into my back yard and did these two little studies. They are of bleeding hearts which are one of my favorite spring flowers. Maybe I will do a painting from these little studies. They are so delicate of a flower.

Sunflower on Canvas???

watercolor 12 x 12 on watercolor canvas

Thought I would try something new....yes, painting on canvas. This is special canvas made for watercolor. It was a lot of fun and I didn't know what was going to happen. Up close it looks like a batik. I am thinking of teaching this at a workshop this summer. I think it would be a lot of fun.
